My students walk into our school and library every day full of life and ready to learn. They are busy, eager and excited.
I teach at a Title I school in Nevada where more than 70 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend because their families struggle financially. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day. Their families want the same for them.
Students learn so much through hands-on, interactive activities. Board and card games are a great way to increase engagement in learning. We need more of these games for students to use in my library classroom.
Playing games help build critical thinking skills while also building social-emotional skills.
Students learn to become gracious winners and losers. Playing as learning also builds cooperation and planning skills. All of these interpersonal skills are critical for students to learn in our increasingly digital society. Building these skills increases their happiness, as well as building life-long skills that will enhance their lives as students and in the workforce in the future.
