This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Read, read, read! An important part of becoming a better reader is to read as much as you can. Another helpful strategy is being read to. Many of my students have parents that cannot read in Spanish or English. I am hoping to provide an opportunity for those students to be read to at home.

I'm a librarian at a Title I school.

My students range from pre-Kindergarten to fifth grade. Fifty percent of our students are Hispanic with the rest divided between white and black. We even have several Hmong families. We have wonderful students but unfortunately, most come from poverty plus English is their second language.

My Project

This school year I ordered 6 playaways to circulate to my students. They are a huge hit! Playaways are prerecorded audio players. Students do not need a cassette player or CD player and cannot delete the story on the player. All that is required is a AAA battery and earbuds. The playaways come with both plus, I am already equipped to replace the battery with a rechargeable battery. My students are really enjoying being read to at home and in the classroom. It provides an opportunity to listen to a story on a higher reading level than they can read. And it helps develop their literacy skills by listening to others read. We just need more of them! Because they are so popular, students must put them on hold in order to check them out. They are never on the shelf. My students are doing a brilliant job of taking care of them. I have not had one lost or damaged. Even the earbuds are holding up.

It will, also, give my kids a better selection. I have picked a variety of stories, some are short stories and some are novels. The short stories have several stories on the playaway. Using technology is another opportunity for me to help level the playing field for my students. They come to school with the disadvantage of being poor and bilingual. Playaways will allow them to have a fun and learn at the same time.
