Play With Your Legos

My students need more fantastic Lego robotics to indulge themselves with. The demand for more robotics/coding has been overwhelming!

My Students

Our school itself is the oldest publicly funded elementary school in the country (378 years and counting), providing access and support to the myriad of learners that call this school home.

My school is incredibly unique since it is nestled in a cultural intersection.

We have students from mostly African-American backgrounds, but there is a strong contingent of Vietnamese, Caucasian, and Hispanic students as well. My students vary from fluent in English to multilingual and have a range of socioeconomic backgrounds, but each one still has that vigor to learn something new.

My Project

My students need Legos. Since first creating a project to get a Science Club up and running at my school, the student response was tremendous. We currently have 14 students in the club, and after talking to a few of them, we've determined what other activities they would be interested in.

Legos was undeniably the direction students wanted to go!

This project then, is heavily focused on students using toys they've built an innumerate amount of objects with, and their introduction into robotics.

After doing a bit of research, and visiting the closest LEGO store, the Mindstorms Set was choice number one. It introduces students to computer programming, and eventually leads them to a path of more complex algorithms. The RC Tracker appears to have some very detailed steps in its creation, and has a remote control component, which I think will give students insight on the engineering design process.
