My Students

When you walk into my Kindergarten classroom, you experience a buzz of excitement for learning. My students come from low-income families where food is scarce, parents work many shifts and are rarely home, and many people are crammed into small living spaces. My students work hard every day to succeed in reading, math, and writing despite hardships they feel at home.

For students who come from poverty, school offers a safe haven where they know they can reach for their dreams and feel successful.

As an A+ Arts Magnet School, I focus on integrating visual arts, music, dance and drama to enrich and deepen my students learning. My classroom is the first place where many students have experiences in academics. Some families have no books or art supplies at home, which drastically impacts students expose to vocabulary and artistic expression. I want to ensure my students have the best resources to propel their learning to new heights. They can achieve so much with your help!

My Project

Kindergarten students are naturally drawn to play and engagement through movement and socialization. Many days my students are asked to sit and listen for too long and I want to change this in my classroom. Play can be structured to incorporate learning objectives while still allowing students the freedom to explore and engage their bodies, voices and imaginations.

Picture learning sight words or retelling a story while walking across the balance beam or using a Hopscotch rug to practice numbers.

My students will love walking the balance beam as they answer addition or subtraction equations or generating their writing by thinking about who was there, where they were and what happened. What better way to practice math skills than through a game of hopscotch! I can see students working on number recognition in the beginning of the year and writing number sentences for each number by the end of the year. They will also learn that moving their bodies and staying fit helps them in and out of school. Students will be learning without knowing as they engage in meaningful play!
