My Project

As an elementary school counselor, I use play to help my younger students process and heal from traumatic events. A lot of students need help learning about emotions, mental health, and coping skills. The materials I'm requesting in this project will give my counseling office a refresh and allow me to work with students in ways that are developmentally appropriate.

As Mr. Rogers said, "For children, play is serious learning".

Students at my school often deal with problems that they are not equipped to handle. Teaching them resilience and healthy coping strategies through play is one of my biggest focus areas. Tools like these are often the most effective when working with students who are in primary grades.

Playdoh and sand have been shown to be effective tools in play therapy practices. The breathing ball is a visual and tactile way for students to regulate their breathing and start gaining control of their emotions. All of the tools in this project will be used by my students in my school counseling office. Some tools will be used by students in emotional crisis, while others will be used to teach students skills that they can use when they find themselves in tough situations.
