Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Two music classrooms... one set of aging instruments! We have some beautiful new drums (see photo!), but our pitched instruments are lacking in number and quality. Please help us make music in BOTH of our music rooms.
Our students are kids from many cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.
They are enthusiastic, talented, and capable learners. We have been working on a West African drumming unit, and their incredible excitement has been matched only by their incredibly respectful treatment of one another and of the instruments they are working with. These kids are also incredibly creative. They love to make their own music by improvising with instruments and voices. Mostly, though, they are regular, wonderful, special kids. Most of them walk to school from their homes. They each have challenges and obstacles, but they are resilient and resourceful. I am honored and inspired by my journey to help them learn and grow each day.
My Project
Right now, we have two xylophones and one metallophone to share between the two music rooms (and two music teachers) in our very large school. Having two more instruments would make it possible for both classrooms to have a set of instruments, and to share for larger projects and concerts.
Playing melodic instruments is incredibly rewarding for children. The idea that they are capable of playing a SONG from start to finish with the proper notes and rhythms is tremendously gratifying. It is also excellent preparation for playing recorders in the upper elementary grades, as it helps kids learn to understand note reading and melodic direction.
One example of a project that I would do with these new instruments would be taking parts of a fairy tale and having small groups compose sound pieces to tell that section of the story. Adding a melodic instrument to this assignment makes it much more aesthetically pleasing and expressive.
This project will help my students to grow in their understanding of themselves as musicians.
With high quality equipment to support high quality programming, they can learn to see themselves with new respect. They will work together with their classmates to create beautiful music, and they will know that they are capable of adding beauty to the world. Please support this project and help me create a new generation of great music!
