Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What makes my students special? They're mine! I teach at a fully funded Title I school in New Mexico. My average (5th grade) student reads at a high 2nd, to 3rd grade level. More than half of my students do not know their basic multiplication/division facts. Low income, low education, small apartments in neighborhoods where law enforcement is present for domestic violence and drug distribution, single parent homes, neglect, little or no educational support at home are standard in the lives of my kiddos.
This is my second year teaching in a Title I school, and teaching 5th grade.
Previous experience was affluent, ESL, and middle school so I am learning on a daily basis what my students need to rise to the challenge of being prepared for middle school. My focus is finding hands-on tools for my active students to get down to the basics. My goal is to send my 5th graders out into the world with the ability to be resourceful, productive members of society.
My Project
Play, Learn, Master and SUCCEED!
These materials will make a difference in my students' lives because they will help them gain understanding of specific math skills through the use of games and hands-on, self-correcting activities that they can use to practice basic math skills individually,or learning from their peers in a group.
These games, like flash cards and Numeracy, will provide them with a tangible experience that will leave a lasting impression. We are struggling like never before when it comes to these skills. I am certain that with these games as an additional tool, my students will be able to master these skills. As we prepare for state testing, I am sure that these tools will help us achieve success.
