This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity." ~John F. Kennedy Being active and playing helps the mind be active and engaged.

I teach all subjects in an all day kindergarten in a high-need school.

I have 24 students. 85% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language. 87% of students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch, meaning these families are living at or below the poverty line. Many families do not have the funds to purchase items that are used in imaginary play or physical activity. So, having these items at school are so important, this way all of my students get to experience these things.

My Project

If you are familiar with the budget cuts in California, then you know asking for anything that is not deemed as "essential", will not be purchased. Items that are used for play would not be deemed as "essential". My 5 and 6 year olds need to have a variety of items to play with at recess. Adding dinosaurs, play food, child sized brooms, ball toss, balls, and play food, students will have more items to use and play with during recess. During recess we take out our play kitchen and play food that we already have. It would be great to have a larger variety of items, such as, play dinosaurs, balls and ball toss. I believe when students play with these items they are talking about what they are playing with, which helps them develop their English skills. Play also helps with problem solving skills and getting along with others. Having a variety of toys to talk about, will encourage my students to talk more and broaden their vocabulary.

Your donation will make it possible for my 5 and 6 year olds to play and learn at the same time.

Because we will take these items out at recess your donation will also contribute to 3 other classes of kindergarten students who will also get to play with these items. Along with our pre-schoolers who also use our playground at a different time. You will put a smile on a whole bunch of little faces!
