My Students

Our wide-eyed kindergarten students are a combination of general and special education learners.

They overflow with joyful laughter, infectious energy, and a heartwarming love for learning.

Our students are 5 and 6 year olds who predominantly come from economically disadvantaged homes. Many of the experiences they have in kindergarten are brand new to them. Our students are blank slates and we are honored to expose them to an engaging world of endless learning and exploration opportunities. Our classroom is a place of structure, routines, boundaries, love, and high expectations where every child will experience success and grow in a fun and engaging way that is developmentally appropriate.

My Project

Prior to the pandemic I witnessed some of the best sharing, pride, and growth-mindset that always occurred on the carpet while students cooperatively worked on a puzzle or building. Continued practice and opportunities led to successful sharing, growth mindset, problem solving skills, fine motor development, sharpened cognitive skills, and a contagious visible joy for learning. During the pandemic touching and sharing materials was discouraged and significantly reduced in an effort to create and sustain a safe teaching and learning environment for staff and students. In some school environments sharing and using hands-on resources was eliminated altogether. Therefore, more than ever before students will need more opportunities to learn through touch, exploration, and building this upcoming school year.

I look forward to the upcoming school year where early learners can thrive through hands-on and cooperative learning and playing.

Children who engage with these resources will have an opportunity to learn by doing and touching and develop teamwork and sharing skills. They will also have the opportunity to develop and strengthen academic and cognitive skills.
