My Project

I am a special education teacher in an urban and low socio-economic status area. This is my first year teaching autistic support. I currently have eight students in my self contained classroom. Even though physically, they are the age of third through fifth graders developmentally they appear much younger. My students struggle with academics, communication, and socialization. Things like sharing, turn taking, and even just engaging with others is difficult for them.

Board games like Hungry Hungry Hippos, Don't Wake Daddy, Don't Break the Ice, Don't Rock the Boat and Cootie, can offer several benefits for children with autism!

Playing board games encourages interaction with peers, helping children practice turn-taking, sharing, and cooperation, which are essential social skills. They help with emotional regulation; providing a structured environment where children can learn to manage emotions, cope with winning or losing, and understand the perspectives of others. They require attention and focusing while also being fun and enjoyable.
