What is the difference between a carbon cycle and a carbon footprint? What is the greenhouse effect? What makes plants grow? Why are worms important? Can we run out of water? My second-grade students want to learn the answers to these questions so they can learn how to help save the planet.
My students need STEM resources and books to learn about worms, water, and growing plants so they can become stewards of the earth!
I am asking for books to read during our recess read-along time including National Geographic Readers: Seed to Plant; as well as books about worms, gardens, and bugs. I am also asking for supplies so my students can plant flower cards and watch them grow. I want my students to learn the various parts of plants, seeds, and flowers and about basic photosynthesis and pollination. After we read Uncle John's City Garden I want my students to understand that just like the character in the book, a few packets of seeds, some helping hands, and hard work transform an empty lot into a magical place. I plan to give each child an Earth Day coloring book, colored pencils, and stickers to take home and share with their families.
I have a dream of teaching my second graders that every day is Earth Day. I want them to learn that the small things they do every day can change our planet.
Our school does not have the funds for this type of creative STEM project. Please help my students learn about science and Earth Day.
