Planting Seeds Through Reading, Growing Understanding Through Practice

Help me give my students a first-hand experience of the nature they read about but are lacking from living in an urban city by providing us with microscopes, activity tubs, and slides.

My Students

My students are wonderful, caring little humans. They don’t have the best of everything but they still try to give their best almost every day. They would give you their only dollar if they thought it would help you. In fact, I’m more than one occasion when I have addressed taking care of school materials and respecting our classroom, multiple students have come up to me after and offered me their lunch money to replace an item, which I always refuse, but this goes to show how they are selfless and full of love for their teacher, classroom and learning. Many are learning English as a second language as it is not the primary language in their household. Some are also dealing with difficult home life and things that no one would ever want to see an 8-year-old​ deal with and yet no matter the obstacles in their way they come into my classroom ready to learn and grow. They are tiny little superheroes.

My Project

My students are currently studying plants by reading informational text, but what good is reading if they can’t fully conceptualize it or if they can’t wonder about the mysteries of the natural world? This project was created to give my city-dwelling students the opportunity to explore what they read about through hands-on experience. We live in the middle of a city that is greatly lacking nature, outside of a few cacti here and there. This project will allow students to further expand their knowledge of plants and how they affect our environment by giving them hands-on experiences that allow them to explore nature!
