Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Unfortunate whole foods in the USA today are expensive. What children call food many times doesn't resemble anything that provides nutritional value. Kids today are eating genetically modified food type items and bringing them into my classroom. I provide 1 healthy snack per day for these kiddos and the basket seems to always be empty. This tells me that they're craving real food but may not have access to it.
The "snacks" my student walk into my classroom with can not be classified as food.
My goal to teach students what healthy nutritious food is, how to grow it, and how food and science are related. Growing systems and towers are perfect for my classroom setting. I have space for the systems and different groups of students in my room each day to help maintain and observe the process. It's important for students to understand that the growing of good healthful food is not 100% based on their outside environment. We have the ability to be creative on how we grow food. I'd like students to plan non-traditional growing spaces as part of this project.
I also think it's important for students to learn how nature has influenced science. I want my learners to see interconnections between food and innovation. I work with students on transference of learning and this is a key component. The book requested will help us begin the journey with the end product as a research project where students will create their own prototype of a new product based on a chosen food.
