Our Advisory classes offer a chance for students to explore subjects that are often neglected in traditional subjects. We cover a variety of topics, from "school skills" like organization and time management to social-emotional curricula like resiliency, communication, and community service.
Encinal Junior/Senior High School is a public, Title 1-eligible 6th through 12th grade school serving a diverse student body with no ethnic/racial majority.
A large percentage of our students are English Language Learners (with over 20 home languages!), and many of our families are eligible for free or reduced lunch. We come together from many different walks of life, from countries around the world, and we work hard to build a cohesive, close learning community. Our entering 6th graders are at the beginning of their journey at our school. They come from elementary schools across the island of Alameda. Advisory class, in part, serves to bring these students together as a group. This book will help to do that.
My Project
All of our 6th graders are enrolled in Advisory class, which meets in small groups of about 10-15 students. Each spring, we focus on a community service project chosen and implemented by the students in each Advisory. Seedfolks is a wonderful example of a diverse community coming together with a common goal. In addition, it shows the power of each individual in exacting change.
The book will be read as an example, and will be accompanied by walking field trips to a local community garden as well as grocery stores, farmer's markets, and a multicultural center.
The notebooks will give students a place in which to collect their thoughts, questions, and ideas.
Every sixth grader (approximately 110 students) in our school will be given the opportunity to read and reflect upon this book in Advisory.
By ordering 60 books, we will be able to share them among the Advisory teachers. Shared readings build community, and when an entire class reads the same text, that community building is extended.
