Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Allowing students to observe and measure plant growth provides tremendous tool for a semester-long hands-on inquiry project in Biology! Students will design their own experiments using experimental design with control and treatments. Students will determine their own treatment which can include light color or intensity, variation in water amount or quality, or other ideas they dream up. Students will observe and measure the impact of their treatment on plant growth with least 2 replicates. Students will work in small groups of 3-4, to grow plants from bean seeds in 4-6 small pots filled with potting soil, that will rest on the plant stands with grow lights. Each group will have 1-2 trays to keep their plants organized.
Many of my students have never seen plants grow before, and this project drives incredible student engagement, as students are excited to come to class every day to see how their plants are doing!
My students are from an urban environment and benefit greatly from this hands-on plant project. This project appeals to students with special needs as it is fun and engaging to watch their plants grow and develop. This project will allow hands-on experience with conducting a scientific experiment using student-driven experimental design. It also allows application of mathematics to analyze the data that they collect. Students will then provide a lab report written in scientific format, which they can take ownership of and improve literacy. I sincerely hope you will consider contributing to this project for my well-deserving students.
