Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This Teach For The Planet Project was inspired by "Planting Detroit Solutions For Pollution." Do you remember doing a fun science experiment in school? The first graders in my class love doing hands-on science activities. We need a few supplies to study the effects of pollution on plant growth. Students will grow plants to observe and chart the negative effects of pollution on plant life.
I teach twenty-seven eager first grade students who enjoy learning how to read, write, add and subtract, and learn basic science concepts.
Our wonderful school is located in sunny Southern California. My students range from gifted and talented to below grade level. We are proud to be a Nationally Recognized School of Excellence and have won many prestigious awards. Since we are not a Title One School, funding extra projects is very difficult.
My Project
Students will examine how environmental factors affect plant growth. Over several months, students will study plant life cycles and pollution. My young scientist will keep a journal and make hypotheses about the effects of pollution on plant growth. Students will examine the negative effects that polluted air, water, and soil have on plant growth. Using the seed assortment I am requesting, students will grow plants in a Growlab indoor garden. This lab is essential for my classroom because my classroom does not have any windows. My scholars will use magnifying glasses, microscopes, and PH strips to observe the effects of plants exposed to pollution as well as plants not exposed to pollution. Students will write observations, draw pictures, and write conclusions about our findings. Projects will proudly be displayed during our school science fair and open house.
Our planet Earth will continue to deteriorate if people keep on polluting our water, soil, and air.
My young scientists will need to develop solutions in the future to stop and reverse the negative effects of pollution on our planet. By doing fun, hands-on experiments, students will learn about plant life cycles, and the negative affects of pollution on our delicate ecosystem. All we need are a few supplies to inspire a love of science. Thank you for considering our plant project!
