I teach English Language Arts to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders in a small, rural school in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
The students' interests range from playing sports to participating in drama camp to showing farm animals at the county fair.
They are quirky, high energy, and love creative lessons.
Our school is categorized as highest poverty. All students are offered free breakfast and lunch. I am thankful that they don't have to worry about what they will eat at school and instead can focus on what they will learn.
My Project
"Teaching is art -- creation -- and a curriculum map is only as good as the teacher who considers it, who questions it, and who revises it to meet the needs of each year's students." -Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle
While teachers do relax and recharge over the summer, we also spend a lot of time planning for the upcoming school year.
This year, I will be teaching a new-to-me class: Honors English. This includes 20 juniors and seniors who are working to build college-level reading and writing skills. In addition, I will be teaching English Language Arts to two sections of seniors and three sections of sophomores. I have a lot of planning to do!
I am requesting two professional development books. One is "180 Days: Two Teachers and the Quest to Engage and Empower Adolescents" by Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle. The other is "Beyond Literary Analysis: Teaching Students to Write with Passion and Authority About Any Text" by Allison Marchetti and Rebekah O'Dell.
In addition, I am requesting the book "Lion", which I will be teaching in my Honors English class that I have not yet read myself. The memoir "Lion" was previously published as "The Long Way Home." I would like to plan lessons for this book over the summer.
Finally, I am requesting a teacher planner so that I can put notes from my summer reading into the planner. I look forward to mapping out the school year, especially for this new Honors class, and I can add plans right into the appropriate spots in the planner so that I do not forget to incorporate these new ideas and strategies throughout the year. The goal is to engage and empower my students, helping them to become better readers and writers.
