My Project

The focus has been on Social Emotional Learning and students have been highly motivated to share and further develop their understanding of a number of important Core Competencies as expressed and assessed in our school. I want to create a kindness activity by allowing students to individualize their creations and "gift", an act of sharing some positive affirmations and create connections to their peers. It is a fully inclusive activity: Absolutely everyone can participate.

I think a great first initiative to begin a new school year to create Kindness Counts buttons.

The goal is to encourage acts of kindness but in particular to remember the power and impact of a simple smile. I also want to encourage students to be Makers: to imagine, to problem-solve, to design, to work cooperatively, to build and to create. Student work is celebrated, confidence is built and students take pride in their accomplishments and efforts.

This direct work tool is a projective technique which is aimed at identifying a

young person’s family and social relationships, cultural competency, advocating, peer and group collaboration which are important to them. Students will be highly engaged, not only in making the buttons, but in developing a deeper connection to the message they are sharing. There is a greater understanding of the issues. Creating the buttons, sharing the process, visibly acknowledging that the school as a whole is working together, helps build and connect our school community.
