My Project

My students love learning English through the Oxford Picture Dictionary and workbook. The activities are authentic to daily life and students connect with the characters, Elena, Alex, Jasmine, and Tyler. They have an easier time remembering the content when they are practicing reading and writing in the workbook, and we are discussing the new vocabulary as they work. I have noticed an amazing difference in their motivation and retention with these books.

I also have many, many Spanish-speaking students, which I feel can be isolating for my students who speak other languages.

I want to help my students who speak Swahili feel more included by seeing themselves and their language represented in our classroom library. I hope the books included in English and Swahili will tell stories that the students can relate to, and that seeing their language makes them feel like a part of our colorful classroom.
