Pictures Worth a Thousand Words

My students need a Kodak digital camera and HP scanner to enhance their learning experiences in using the computer lab for reading and writing.

My Students

Even at age 6-8 year you can experience writers block, but when you have a scanned photo or one you have just taken with a camera, you have a never failing point of inspiration! We live in an age flooded with images, no wonder they are often challenged when faced with a empty page to write upon.

My students live in a high poverty rural area of Arkansas, high unemployment and little prospect of change without an inspired education.

Some students ride a bus an hour to school. When larger more densely populated school districts spend funding on educational supplies and technologies, much of our budget has to go to transportation. In stark contrast to the poverty my students live among some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the nation. I want my students to see and use that positive aspect of their lives for inspiration and to gain a well rounded education that will prepare them for a better future. This equipment will give students hands on opportunities they can receive no where else in the community, but school. My students all of our students will need to be technology literate to be productive citizens in the 21st century job market.

My Project

Students will capture photos with the still camera or scan photos they bring from home. These images will be imported into MS Word to write a wide range of stories. We will use a rubric for each writing experience to help student glean a list of descriptive words from the photos that they will then assemble in creative and well constructed sentences to tell a story. We will share these stories and photos with classmates and friends and save them to our journals. Through critiques we will guess what a particular photo means and then see if it matches what the author has written. Besides learning to improve their writing and reading skills students will learn the use of a digital camera and the skills needed to compose a image that tells a story with or without words. Students will also gain knowledge of the use of the scanner and the possible ways to change and edit images.

A Kodak digital camera portrait can inspire a descriptive story or describe emotions deeper than the surface of a face.

An HP scanned image can connect words that tell a story of memories from a summer vacation photo, a family member, or favorite pet. Images and words are key to building beginning and advance reading skills. From birth we begin to communicate with drawings and mark making which helps develop visualization, and the written word has more power when connected to a mental image.
