My Students

My students use photographs and videos for a variety of projects in the classroom. We no longer are given a camera by our technology department to share among five classrooms. I have purchased one camera with my own money for my students to use, but the students need more availability.

My co-teacher and I have 48 students covering a diverse range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, socioeconomic levels, and learning needs.

They provide us examples every day of how people who are extremely different can get along and work together. These fourth and fifth grade students are taught in two mixed grade classrooms using a variety of grouping techniques. They are enthusiastic, caring, helpful, and ready for almost anything. They come up with great ideas that we encourage them to develop and that we try to incorporate into what we do.

My Project

Currently in our classrooms, cameras are used for a variety of projects. Students take photographs to use for illustrating research projects. They import photos into PowerPoint slide shows to create presentations. Scenes or skits are videotaped to create movies. Artwork is photographed to document growth in their portfolios. Science experiments are photographed for science fair presentations. Photographs are used to illustrate writing pieces being published. A recent example is the ePub our students created based on reading projects they completed, complete with photos illustrating their writing pieces. As budgets are repeatedly cut, we no longer are provided cameras to use by the technology department in our school. Although I purchased one camera with my personal money for the classroom, it does not go far when shared among 48 students. Even two more will allow several small groups to work with them at the same time.

Students need access to the technologies they will be expected to use in their jobs and daily lives.

For some students, the use of technological tools can encourage the development of more basic skills, such as writing about the images they have caught digitally. For other students, cameras can expand upon the skills they are already using, and engage them in new and different ways. Our students have wonderful ideas that we would love to see captured on camera.
