My Students

As a teacher in a low-income, high-poverty school, I see that my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Every year, I have at least one student who experiences homelessness. I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous.

They like to move and read, and they love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch.

From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.

My Project

COVID has changed so many things about schools. There are the obvious things the media has covered like learning gaps and students' mental well being. There is another piece that doesn't get much attention.

We aren't allowed to have visitors at school so parents can't participate in parties, awards, successes or volunteer.

I would like to get an instant camera that prints pictures. This will allow me to take pictures of students and send them home. I will take pictures at parties, during special projects and to record successes. Students will be able to take these photos home and explain their learning and what they have done at school. By students explaining what they have learned at home, it will help them remember their learning even more. Parents can't be at school but pictures will help them feel like they were.
