My Students

Do you remember reading page after page in a boring science textbook? Reading about science experiments but never getting to do them? I want my students to be authentically engaged in science. I want them to learn to love science!

My students are first graders in Alaska.

We are one of four first grades in a Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd grade school. Our school is on an Air Force base in Alaska. Our school is a high poverty school with a high transient rate. Our students are children of men and women serving in the Air Force. They live the military life so they move every two to three years. Moving so often makes it difficult for young learners to learn even easy concepts.

My Project

The books in which I am requesting to purchase are fiction and non-fiction children's literature. I hope to make science more engaging by using these types of books. Studies state that students who use science trade books instead of textbook score significantly higher on state standardized tests. I will use picture books to engage students in science inquiry and to increase science understanding.

As a first grade student, I remember my science teacher.

She read us interesting books, brought in things, and did experiments with us. She made science fun and left us wanting to learn more. I want to be that kind of teacher! I want to make science memorable for my first grade students.
