Picture-Perfect Science Collection

My students need to use authentic literature for science inquiry. By reading high interest stories I can guide them toward scientifically oriented questions.

My Students

Testing, testing, testing! Arghhh! Students need to learn concepts not just the facts. Inquiry helps them do that. Imagine reading a story about a seal and an oil spill then using the story as a springboard to design an investigation about how to clean up an oil spill and spill prevention.

My students live in an urban setting.

Thye attend public school. Most, about 60%, are English language learners. More than 50% of my students are on free or reduced lunch. They are aged 10-11 years old and most love science. They want to do well they are excited when they walk through the door and I want to harness this enthusiasm and keep them motivated. What better way than a read aloud. Everyone loves to be read to! This collection of books has been chosen by the National Science Teachers Association.

My Project

My students have ideas about how things work ie. seasons, weather, heat transfer, most of which are incorrect. Due to the heavy emphasis on math and ELA testing, science is barely taught in the primary grades. So my classes have students without a great deal of background knowledge. Most never go to science museums or watch the Discovery channel or PBS. In order to engage my students it helps to read aloud picture books. After reading I try to guide them to a testable question. This is the beginning of scientific inquiry; it is the same process research scientists use. Because inquiry is a collaborative effort, English language learners must interact with native speakers which exposes them to reading, speaking and writing English. They want to do well and they want to do investigations and Picture Perfect can help. Picture Perfect is not a complete science unit, but it supports, enriches, and extends the curriculum.

Your donation will not only help my class this year, but these books will delight students year after year.

We need to help students think critically and inquiry does that. Often times their conclusions lead to dead ends or trigger other inquiries and that is what science is... not a bunch of facts in a textbook.
