Our school is in the diverse city of San Francisco where we have students from all corners of the world including Vietnam, India, China, Mexico, and Poland, just to name a few. Just as we are diverse in cultural and economic backgrounds, we are also diverse in academics. We have students who are new to the country and just learning to read, write, and speak English. We also have students who are reading beyond their grade level.
I provide physical education to every student in the school.
They are curious learners who aren't afraid to explore, ask questions, experiment, and think outside the box. Some students have sports teams and activities outside of school. But for many, P.E. is the only time they have access to certain types of sports equipment. As we all know, children are our future. So as their teacher, I would like to do all that I can to provide the best learning environment for them so that each student can be successful.
Physical Education is usually seen as "extracurricular." But it is so much more than just fun and games. In P.E. class, students learn important skills beyond just physical activity. They learn to work together, to show good sportsmanship, to persevere, and to have an active and healthy lifestyle.
If this project is funded, my students will have enough paddles, nets, and goals to use to play games such as pickleball, tennis, and European handball.
We are very lucky that our school district has supported the Physical Education department and has provided an array of equipment for students to access throughout the school year. . . even at the elementary level!
However, we do not always have a full class set of equipment for all students to use at once, especially in the upper grade classes with 33 students. This project will help assure that all students will have equal access to equipment.
