My students are self-motivated, hard workers who love music, love their community, and are emphatically enjoying making music together in the classroom again. For some of them, this is their first time making music as an ensemble since beginning band virtually. For others, this year was a long-overdue return to "normalcy," and a welcome one at that.
These kids are bright, passionate, curious, altruistic, and community-minded.
Even when they are dealing with the struggles of a pandemic and fluctuating safety guidelines, they maintain optimism, bring energy and enthusiasm to the music room, and are always willing to work hard. Some even eat lunch quickly so they can spend the second half of their lunch period practicing together! How great is that??
My Project
In September 2021, the band director of ~15 years got a job much closer to home. She secured an amazing substitute--a retired science teacher who taught at the same school for many years and happens to be a horn player and amazing human. The sub planned for 2 weeks. I was hired the first week of October, but due to some unfortunate circumstances, I couldn't start until December. Now that I am there, the stands will make it much easier for me to safely store the instruments I use for demos--I have my own stands for my instruments.
While the sub is a musician, she was not trained in music education; and yet, she did a *phenomenal* job at keeping the program running!
The kids played every day--many would have turned to written work or videos. Though she did amazing work with them, some students, particularly reed players, developed some incorrect habits during that time. Now is the time to pick up some of those pieces.
Our brass players like to make a fun sound on their mouthpieces that tend to get them stuck. The repair kit was the property of the previous teacher, so we would like to replace the 2 most frequently used tools: the mouthpiece puller and truer for when they accidentally hit the floor... oops!
Our reed players were not taught to sufficiently soak their reeds either. Why should this occur to the brass-playing sub without proper training? That said, I am hoping to invest in some spare double reeds, a classroom set of glasses for soaking reeds, paint markers to label them, and a single pack of disposable cups I can hand out to current and future reeds players. The mouthwash is for the sanitation of double reeds after adjustments.
