My students come from varied backgrounds but one thing unites them. They all love to tell me things that they have learned; whether it be something they have seen on TV, something they saw on Instagram or something they heard in a class. I want to share my love of literature with them. Most of them have not been exposed to novels, unless they have been made into movies. Let's be honest, the book is always better!
In this digital age, it is hard to encourage reluctant readers to dive in to a book.
A lot of grace needs to be shown. Many of these students have not been taught responsibility. They have not been encouraged to read other than what is required at school. Hopefully my enthusiasm for books will not only expand their knowledge, increase their comfort level with books and teach them life skills at the same time.
My Project
Many of my students have to overcome obstacles before they enter my classroom. One of them is a negative view of education.
In my classroom, where you sit and what you sit on should not be an obstacle to learning.
If someone has had back to back academic classes and then they come to mine, they may need to "chill" on the floor with their feet stretched out. Laptop desks are very versatile and students will be able to sit in many areas of the room with their legs not in the way of other students. If they have had a STEM class where they were bent over a project, they may need a comfortable, flexible chair in order to be able to focus at their highest level. The Big Joe Aloha chair will fit the bill. If changing where they sit changes their opinion of reading, "Pick your favorite chair," PLEASE!
