My Students

I am coming to the end of a school year with a class I have spent the last two years with. My students come to me as second graders, and leave as third graders. This looping experience is always wonderful. It gives us time to build lasting relationships, I'm able to learn how they can be motivated and engaged, and can start year two with routines in place. We build a family.

As our new school year begins, I will be meeting a new group of 2nd graders.

We will begin our days with songs, morning meetings and relationship building activities. Students will be encouraged to be curious and creative. They will be supported and challenged. They will read, and be read to. They will have time to explore and collaborate.

Our school is in the midst of a small rural town in Florida. All our students travel to school by car or bus. Our school focuses on engagement, rigor, creativity and building relationships. We have a STEM class for intermediate learners. Our school has multiple classrooms in levels Pre-K through 5th grade.

My Project

It is an exciting time each month when the Scholastic flyer comes into our classroom. We browse these flyers and find books from our favorite authors and about our favorite characters. They look at the topics in the nonfiction titles, wondering what they can learn. Students circle and star the many books they would love to have!

If this project is funded, my students can choose their very own book each month and keep it forever.

Sadly, students usually bring home these flyers with many wishes, but families are unable to make the purchases. Each year, fewer families purchase books. I have to imagine that they're at home library is minimal. I would love to fill their homes with books. I know many parents would love to have books to read with their children, and just can't afford to do that.

We love books in my classroom. We spend a lot of time finding out how wonderful reading is. I use many strategies to motivate my young readers. With your help, I can equip them with the books to read. They will receive one book a month, a book they choose. Parents will have books to read with their children at home. At the end of the year, they will have ten new books to add to their at home library. You can help create the perfect combination, children who love to read, and books they choose to read. Let's get them reading!
