Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so unbelievably blessed with the group of third graders I get to work with this year. While they are all unique in their own way, they all come to school eager to learn and be the best they can be. From day one we have focused on having a growth mindset and never giving up.
We are a 100% free lunch elementary school in a high poverty, low income neighborhood.
Resources are limited, but as teachers we know how to be creative to give our students the education they deserve. We may not have everything, but together we have it all!
My Project
In our class we have been slowly transitioning to a flexible seating environment, and it is going SO WELL! Giving my students the freedom to sit where they will be the most successful has amped up the engagement and participation a ton! In order to do this, however, organization is KEY!
The next flexible seating option I would like to introduce is a floor table with wobble cushions.
Let's face it, as teachers, we recognize the importance of differentiating curriculum. Why not seating too? Some kids LOVE to sit on the floor. I have decided to use one of my existing tables, remove the leg extensions, and - VOILA - a floor table! The cushions are necessary so kids aren't sitting on the cold, hard floor, AND they support little movements or "wiggles" that won't disrupt the rest of the class.
With flexible seating comes the crucial necessity of staying organized! Many of our supplies are shared, so when students don't have a traditional desk to store their items, it's important to provide a place where they can access what they need quickly.
