Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students come to school in the U.S. for the very first time. At first, they are excited and nervous, because everything is new to them and they're having to learn new ways. Then comes the culture shock and they miss their home, family, friends, and their old ways. ELL students are an incredible group of students! They are highly motivated to learn and succeed. Oklahoma is a WIDA Consortium state and we teach our students the academic vocabulary of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies both written and orally.
Our English curriculum, Vista Learning, is very interactive but we have to buy the materials and resources we need to supplement the lesson.
Most lessons have a writing and/or art project that the students may complete. At the end of each unit, there is a large writing and art project that the students must complete to show proficiency in the new academic vocabulary that they learned throughout the unit. We have a community bucket of markers and crayons that the students can use for their projects. I would like for my students to take more pride in their masterpieces by providing them with their own set of markers, colored pencils, crayons, and paint. Some projects that the students must make are Symbols of the United States, Weather Picture, Family Collage, Brochures about Community Helpers, Bodies of Water and Landforms, and many more.
