My Students

Our students are musicians! In music class we learn how to play many instruments, how to sing in multiple languages, and develop an operational understanding of the basic elements of music. Once students learn the basics in class they go home and share those skills with their families and the community. This is every teacher's dream!

Between ukulele club, choir, band, and orchestra our students are always looking for opportunities to learn new music skills to use in their free time!

As their music teacher I am always on the hunt for the next song/instrument/tool to reach our diverse population. This has led to our music program growing in many ways. We now have over 50 students in our choir every year, ukuleles and cajons have been added our curriculum, students learn to use a notation software program on their laptops, and we spend 2-4 months each year focusing on music from outside of the US. These are just a few ways our music program has changed over the years to help students be more creative in and out of the classroom.

My Project

Every year our students grow in their musical skills. As they achieve more independence they need tools to support them. Having a class set of portable pianos (and charging stations) will allow our students to check their work as they sing, perform, compose, and game in the music room.

We will use our pianos to learn about scales, intervals, chords, tuning sequences (for ukuleles especially), and to compare our voices with when we're learning new songs.

Right now students have to rely on me to provide the correct notes when they're singing a new song, tuning their instrument, and creating harmonies. If they had their own pianos this would help our amazing young musicians become even more independent!
