it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Music is alive at in the Bronx! We hold 4 major concerts each school year which is available to every student in the school, we have a year-round chorus and 5th-grade band program available to our upper-grade students, and every student attends music class at least once a week to participate in singing, dancing, and games!
When I ask students what their favorite instrument is, their answer is most often 'piano'.
Our school received a beautiful new piano this past school year, and it has inspired many students to want to learn. A lot of the music we listen to and sing along to is accompanied by the piano. With these digital keyboards, students will be able to participate in a piano unit in music class and their piano dreams will come true!
My Project
Our students love to play instruments. As lower grade students, they play hand drums, shakers, bells, and boomwhackers, and in the upper grades we learn to play ukulele. However, our students have had their eyes on one instrument in particular that I have not been able to teach them.
"Ms Fayazi, can you teach me how to play the piano?" We sing and dance in music class as I play the piano for the students.
Students are always trying to press the piano keys as they line up to go back to class. When our accompanist comes through for our Spring and Winter concerts, the students are amazed at the talent they are experiencing! Giving this opportunity to my students would mean a lot, especially when this opportunity may never present itself to them again.
