I teach in a culturally and economically depressed area and most of my students have never been exposed to different styles and types of music. I have the rare pleasure of being able to open the world of music to these students. They are so eager to learn and willing to try just about anything I throw at them. We’ve experimented with everything from xylophones to ukuleles. My students are learning to read music and play various instruments.
One of my fondest memories was when a student thanked me for teaching her something she never thought she could do.
Another was able to talk her father into buying her a ukulele after our unit on string instruments.
After recently leaving the position a Librarian/Music Teacher for our district, I made the decision to dive in head first to teach music full time. My room is all set up. For the first time in my career, I actually have a dedicated space for my students to experiment with everything from percussion instruments to their voices, guitars, pianos, and accordions.
My Project
Please help me provide a piano bench for my piano students. I have 20 piano students this year and they practice all week, playing a Masterclass/recital for each other on Fridays. They also give recitals several times throughout the year for parents and various other teachers and students.
By providing my students with this piano bench they will develop better posture and in turn better piano playing skills.
By teaching them to play this instrument, I'm helping to develop their fine motor skills, cognitive thinking and complex thought patterns.
As of now we don't have a piano bench in the music room. All they have is basic school chairs, some on wheels. These aren't conducive to good piano playing posture.
