Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a large high school (1650 students) in a rural area. We are a growing school, and we are now in our second year of having a computer science (programming) class. We are the older, and now smaller, of two comprehensive high schools in our district.
While it is cool to program, and watch what happens on the screen, it is a better educational experience when students can spend more time doing hands-on activities.
My students are predominately second language learners, and most (about 70%) qualify for free lunch. These students are great. Many do not have parents who have gone to college, so a major focus of our school is in preparing students to think about going on with education after high school.
My Project
Wait... you want HATs? That is correct... but first we need to understand what a HAT really is. In this case, HAT stands for Hardware Attached on Top. We will be adding additional circuit boards on top of our Raspberry Pis (micro computer) that we use in class so we can add additional functionality to them.
We are going to build programmable "cars" with the Raspberry Pi functioning as the brain that controls the wheels of the car.
By adding a HAT, we can control the wheels of the cars that our students will be building. Once we get functional vehicles, then we can transform them into line following, or wall sensing cars or ... but that is up to the students to determine where their imagination will take them.
