My Students

Harding Fine Arts Academy is a college-preparatory high school that focuses on arts integration. The student body is diverse. Some are from upper middle class families of the Oklahoma City Metro. However, a majority are from lower income families and take advantage of the free lunch program.

HFAA is in its tenth year and has approximately 350 students, grades 9-12.

Thirty of these amazingly talented and committed teenagers are on our staff (with an additional 45 students from the multimedia class also creating submissions). The official title of the course is journalism, and as they learn the principles of journalism, they apply them through both the newspaper and yearbook publications. This is quite an undertaking using only one class period per day and countless after school hours.

My Project

I am requesting 1 Nikon 55-300mm zoom lens, 1 Nikon 50mm lens, 1 Microphone, and 2 Ravelli camera tripods with bags. Our classroom is full of energy and interaction. The class is structured like a business with student editors and a respected hierarchy. This year our newspaper, The Beat, is completely digital, and the staff has begged for the ability to create video news stories as well as the written ones. In addition, our yearbook publishing company has asked us to participate in their beta tests implementing cutting-edge technology to link the videos to our 2015 Firehawk so yearbook readers can also enjoy the video experience. We need a shotgun microphone, two tripods, a 50mm lens, and a zoom lens. With this technology, students will improve their communication, journalism and 21st century skills as they design, film and edit weekly assignments that appeal to their peers and the greater school community. Through the powerful medium of video, we hope to provide an enriching experience for all our students.

These students will be learning valuable life-long skills as they impact the entire student body.

Our hope is to create a student-driven video production program that positively impacts school-wide involvement, pride and identity. Thanks to a technology grant received in 2013, we have two Nikon D3100 cameras, but need additional accessories to create professional quality videos.
