My Students

My third grade inner-city general ed students are budding photo-journalists. They need cameras so that they can document important classroom activities to include in their presentations. Right now our classroom has only 5 cameras. Each student needs the autonomy of holding her or his own camera.

All of our students are 100% lunch-funded, which means that ours is a high-need school.

They are learning how to make their own newspapers and power point presentations. They need cameras in order to learn photography skills and how photography can impact their learning… meaningful Real-World learning, not just memorizing and taking tests!

My Project

Since I come from a journalistic background, I love to create newspapers with my students. These cameras will make it possible for us to have "whole class" photography activities in which everyone can work together and individually to learn photography skills, and together make important decisions about design and news content.

Once we have all the cameras, we will have a photography workshop.

We will use the cameras for our Bronx History Quilt and Power Point collaboration called "Las Mujeres" about powerful women in the Bronx. We will be collaborating with the Bronx County Historical Society for this project, and all of our families and friends can come and see our work. You can make this happen! The cameras will be received with great appreciation!
