I teach middle school Photography and Art in Lakeside, California, a rural town in East County San Diego. Our student demographics have changed in the last few years and as a result, we have many more heritages, ethnicities, and cultures to explore and celebrate. Recently our district developed an equity committee, comprised of teachers, administrators and district staff to discuss issues and solutions to equity issues we face as a district. With this grant, I would love to develop opportunities for my photography students to have conversations about diversity and equity on campus and in our community, then capture examples of diversity around campus and in our community through photography.
I have classrooms filled with unimaginable talent.
I have hardworking, focused, respectful, eager to learn students. Creativity flows out of the Art room doors. However, for my photography students, they have nothing they can actually put their hands on. Everything is in our computers!! We need printers!! Not only do more people deserve to see our beautiful contributions to this world through our photography, but students deserve a "hard copy" of their creations for them to frame, showcase and memorialize.
My Project
I'm looking to start a print lab in our photography classroom. I've always displayed and planned on continuing displaying my students' art. Not only is there a sense of pride in holding or seeing your final creation on display, it's motivational as well!
My photography class needs printers.
My photography students work desires to be seen and displayed. The supply list would equip us and future students with the ability to properly print, crop, protect and display our work.
Our hope is to have our much needed supplies by the end of the year so we can display our work at the end of year art show. Our last project is going to be us, our faces. The students are the curriculum, their individual faces are the project. To quote the jury when describing photographer/artist JR - "by exploring the great capacity of art to challenge perspectives and unite communities, his work, highlights the power of art and the work of the artist, which makes visible and gives voice to those who do not have it". Without the ability to display our art we have no voice.
These needed supplies will also give students another method of learning. The process of following through, from the initial idea to the final presentation, students will learn to take more stock in their work.
