Teaching reading is successful when students can relate to the characters, be offered hands-on activities and feel confident in their ability to access the text. \r\n\r\n\"Seedfolk' is a high interest read for our students as it connect community and farm to table. The characters offer various cultural perspectives that my students can learn empathy. They have really enjoyed being able to move in class and use the fidgets as an outlet. When we have long reading assignments or writing assignments having access to the stress balls allows them to channel that anxiousness into a calming feeling. \r\n\r\nWe are going to use the giant balls and Tic-tac-toe game this week in Crew. They love the idea of being able to play a game on the grass, hopefully it will not be too hot this week. We are so lucky to have generous donors like you that made this possible. They are able to connect with the deeper meaning of the text by creating their own community gardens and planting specific seeds that are reflective of their identity. First off, students don't have access to sewing machines in school like I did when I was younger. They have to learn how to use the machines, which requires perseverance and a level of determination that is a necessary skill. I was so proud of my students willingness to stay after school to learn how to sew. They read the really complex directions, watched videos and just used trial and error. They were able to design and create beautiful story quilts and enhanced projects for their Earth and Space unit.
