I am currently the librarian at the Old Boys High School campus, a building that houses three alternative high schools and is located in Bedford Stuyvesant in Brooklyn. The library services all three of these schools. Most of the students in this building come from underprivileged backgrounds. After experiencing various difficulties in their previous schools, many of these students are returning to school for a second chance to get an education and to attain high school diplomas. There was no library at this school prior to my arrival three years ago. Each year I have been working on building the collection. However, the library and the student population is relatively small and therefore funding for books is limited. For this reason, I decided at the outset to build a strong reference collection so that all students will have access to a wider range of information at all times. This collection is heavily used and, in conjunction with access to the Internet and one very useful library database, the general information needs of the students and the faculty are being met. One serious obstacle is that there is no photocopy machine in the library. I have asked my principal if we could purchase one, and while she is cognizant of how crucial a copy machine is for the library, she is unable to help because of the complicated, bureaucratic rules of purchasing in the Department of Education. It's almost impossible to obtain a copy machine for a school library. It has often become necessary for me to take time away from the students and close the library in order to make copies after students visit the library for a research class. With a small photocopy machine that would stay in my office, I could quickly make the necessary copies for students without any hassles and without taking time away from students and teachers. Furthermore, if students see how easy it is to obtain information from books, it will encourage them to turn to books as an alternate resource rather than relying solely on the Internet for information.
