My Students
My students are an energetic and curious bunch of kiddos! They come to school every day with smiles on their faces, eager to learn, despite some of the tough situations they come from. They are thrilled to learn and grow, every day, no matter what challenges they face in their home lives!
Our classroom is a community where the students can feel excited, included, safe, and successful!
Access to hands-on learning materials and books is necessary for their success and engagement in their learning. They are so appreciative of the opportunities that they have to grow as a community of learners together in our classroom!
My Project
Currently, a third of the students in my incoming First Grade class are reading below grade level. These students struggle to identify chunks or letters that combine to make one sound (like -ing, -tch, str-). They also struggle with long vowels and word families.
These students need more practice with these word families to begin identifying them and reading them faster to become fluent readers.
The phonics flip books will be an engaging way for students to have more at-bats with vowel teams and blends and digraphs that are a struggle for them. The quiz cards, pens, and batteries will give students immediate feedback on their work and progress toward mastering word family chunks to blend words together and become faster, smoother readers.
