My Project

Foundational reading skills are crucial for student success in first grade! Currently, our school is piloting a systematic program that introduces students to the foundational reading skills necessary for proficient reading. First graders are practicing phonemic awareness and phonics by orthographically mapping words. They repeat words aloud, tap out their sounds, and then write letters that match each sound. I ́ve designed a phonics kit for individual students. First graders can use blue magnets for consonants and red ones for vowels when tapping out sounds to place on their magnetic, lined white boards. They can then write letters with the dry erase markers and even use a heart magnet over the irregularly spelled word parts that need to be learned by heart! These tools would be very beneficial for the acceleration of their learning. Each first grader would have all the tools they need to blend sounds, read and write. Students would be equipped and enriched!
