Phonics for First Graders

My Students

Enthusiastic, energetic, and eager to learn are just a few ways to describe the students in my first grade classroom each year! My classroom next fall will be full of 20 inquisitive and unique learners in this small, rural public school we are proud to call our home away from home. A community of learners, committed to making sure everyone achieves together is collaboratively created each year through hard work and a never give up attitude.

My students deserve the best because they give everything they have, every day.

Like so many districts, our school has faced adversity in the past few years. Financial constraints and increased class sizes have created obstacles, but that doesn't prevent us from giving our students the best possible learning environment. The students, families, and staff in my district are top notch, and we work together to find innovative ways to meet the needs of all of our learners, even during hard times. Together we will prevail!

My Project

First grade is a year of tremendous growth in reading and writing. Students come into the year as non-readers and leave reading nonfiction texts, chapter books, and fiction picture books with complex plots and dynamic characters. At the beginning of first grade, they are using invented spelling in their writing and trying to get beginning and ending sounds to words. By the the end, they have a good handle on phonics rules, affixes, sentence structure, and spelling patterns that help them write organized books.

Research-based, quality phonics instruction helps students tackle the complex task of reading and writing.

The Units of Study in Phonics will provide my students with the whole group, tier 1 instruction that is necessary to introduce phonics concepts and strategies necessary to help them experience success in reading and writing. The units would allow me to infuse a phonics program into my classroom that is similar to the writing and reading workshop that is already in place, creating a more cohesive literacy education program.
