I work with an amazing group of students in an urban school in Indiana. My classes focus on language, communication, sensory, and social skills needed to be as independent as possible in the post-secondary world.
Without a way to communicate and independently regulate yourself, the world is nearly impossible to navigate.
The energy and spirit of the kids I work with is extremely infectious. While the community lacks financial and material resources, they more then make up for it with school spirit and a determination to succeed.
My Project
The Trideer ball chairs, CanDo Donut Exercise yoga ball, and balance board will help students with low muscle tone and stability improve their strength. The sequin pillows will allow for visual stimulation and tactile stimulation for calming purposes. The orthopedic massage floor mats, three dimensional pin art board, and the National Geographic play sand will help our visually impair students explore textures. The trampoline will help students who need a way to release over stimulation to bring them back down to a calm relaxed state. This room is an area for students to learn to be mindful of their emotions, to reflex and release tension appropriately, and to help them return to a state of mind in which they can learn to their fullest potential back in their educating classrooms. The saucer chair provides deep pressure in an alternative seating option and the lights provide a visually calming atmosphere. Mental health and self regulating is a growing need of focus in our current education system and these materials will help complete our sensory room to give our students a safe place to learn these skills.
