I teach preschool students with disabilities in an inner city that's infamous for crime and poverty. My students in my class are energetic young students with various disabilities, all with autism as one of those disabilities. Despite their struggles, they come to class happy and eager to learn. Our school uses a curriculum called Creative Curriculum and this year, my class and other special education classes have been supplementing the curriculum with the STAR autism curriculum.
Both of these curriculums have studies that include pets and insects and I would love to get them hands-on materials for their learning.
For the pet study, I am looking to get the Jumbo Pets set. These animals are designed to be a larger size and more durable making them ideal for my students, many who have issues with PICA and putting items in their mouth. Another item I am looking to get to go with the pets study is the small world pets set. The pieces are made out of a durable stone and resin mix. When working on the pets study, these pieces will be added to the block area.
With this project, I am also looking for items to go along with the insect study.
For this study, I would like to get the Garden Insect Play Set from Beckers. It includes a board book and collection of five vibrant and soft garden insects(butterfly, bee, caterpillar, ladybug, and dragonfly). When we work on the insects study I would also like to add insect rubbing plates to our art area. The rubbing plates are versatile and fun for art. It allows students to add texture to artwork by placing paper over a plate and rubbing it with a crayon, pencil, or marker to make the design emerge. Thank you in advance.
