As a school counselor at a K-4 school, I work with students who struggle with managing their emotions and behaviors in the classroom. Many must cope with behaviors associated with ADD/ADHD as well as stresses at home and with peers. They find it difficult to focus on learning as they grapple with anger, self-control, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Despite these potential obstacles, my students are resilient. Each day is a new opportunity to try again and become better!
My goal is to give my students the tools and support they need to be able to cope with whatever challenges arise.
Every day, they are striving towards becoming happy and successful young people. I want my students to set goals and to achieve them. It will not be easy. It will take some hard work and perseverance, but I believe in them. I want them to believe in themselves, as well!
My Project
My students need ways to calm down during this stressful time. With students unable to use shared classroom resources, they need personal items available at their desks.
This project would give each student a storage container filled with playdoh and a personally-made calm down bottle that they can keep at their desk.
My students love being involved in creating their calming tools. Classes will be able to add items to this calm down container throughout the year to best meet the needs of each individual student. I know that having these calming tools at their fingertips will enhance their learning environments.
