Performing Arts Program to Inspire Creative Movement with Children
Help me give my students the opportunity to work with a local choreographer, Vincent Brewer, Berkshire Choreography Project, to bring their original educational and musical story about rescuing Earth to life on stage!
The children at my school are extremely excited about writing and producing their own plays and musicals! They have fully embraced the dramatic and theatrical arts that I have begun to integrate into their classroom learning experience. Teaching art allows me to devote a great deal of my time to finding ways to coordinate curricular topics and activities with artistic and creative performances and exhibits, and the children are asking for more of these kinds of learning experiences!
For example, when they create a drawing or painting, we allow time for the artwork to come to life by improvising the characters in their work.
They can be young directors assigning roles to their classmates and asking them to act out the characters in their drawing.
This year the children are learning all about how they can begin to help rescue Earth from some of the climate and global struggles we face. By integrating all of the arts with the academic subject areas, like science, language arts, and social wellness, the children are fully invested in the topic and enthusiastic about the tasks toward producing a show of their own.
My Project
When learning about creating and performing an original work, learning from a professional enhances the entire process. Vincent Brewer encourages the development of new dance and explores creative movement with children and adults. His guest teaching will support the children's unique creative journeys as they produce their own play and musical together.
After writing their own script, and creating original songs for the story, they will learn how to create dance movements that help bring their story to life.
The students will perform in a final production featuring their own original story, as well as their own original songs and dances.
