Performing a Play on Words...Bullying Prevention, Theatre Style
My students need the SC Children's Theatre to help produce a theatre program for our 6th grade classrooms to discuss bullying awareness and prevention.
Located in a very impoverished community, our middle school serves around 780 middle school students yearly. With multiple feeder schools, our school tries our best to ignite a sense of pride and tolerance within our student body. A primary goal of our school is to provide catalyst leadership opportunities to our students to help them dream of a better future. We also began enforcing a particular dress code to "even the playing field" and reduce social bullying. With all of these initiatives in place, we are hoping to change the culture of our school, one student at a time.
In order to build healthy relationships, eradicate bulling, and increase positive tolerance in our school, I want to invite a Bullying Prevention theatre group to come teach classroom workshops to all of my sixth grade students.
This group will educate the students how to avoid, report, and prevent bullying through one of the most powerful modes of expression: performing arts.
My Project
Last year's bullying workshops with this theatre company were AMAZING! Bullying Prevention workshops are conducted by trained adult facilitators and theatre professionals. Workshops are provided to individual classes in order to produce theatrical productions in all sixth grade students in one school day. The workshop is thought-provoking, engaging, educational, and memorable for the students and includes dramatic role-play to give the students a chance to practice their responses to a simulated bullying situation.
The theatre troupe utilizes performing arts to offer information, address the issues of bullying and discuss ways to change student’s thinking and behavior with regard to bullying.
Our current bullying curriculum is stale, so we need something NEW! This group will provide a solid foundation for future bullying education in the classroom.
