This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Each day, students come into my classroom studio ready to work. They are motivated and ready to learn. However, the majority of my students come from under-resourced backgrounds. In fact, 100% of the CHS student body receives free breakfast and lunch in school.
Given the barriers that many students face in our context, dance is a vital creative outlet for self-expression, and physical and emotional well being.
Also, dance improves academic performance and positively contributes to graduation rates. While our dance program has made a lasting impact on the lives of students, I believe that we can do even more for them with your help.
My Project
Mirrors are an important part of the dance learning environment, helping students to check their posture and form and allowing them to be spatially aware of other dancers.
However, as performance time gets closer, it is important for students to practice without the aid of the mirrors, because they won't have them on stage!
Students can sometimes become over-reliant on mirrors. When we arrive in the theater the week before the show, some students, especially new dancers, can become overwhelmed when the mirrors aren't there.
The curtains need to be large enough to cover our 8-foot mirrors, so room dividing curtains will be the best choice. We will also need curtain rods to make it so that I can slide the curtains back and forth as we need them.
In our last DonorsChoose.org project, we received aux cords so that students could use their own devices to play music for choreography. Many students have Apple products, and these dongles will make the aux cords usable on every device.
