My school is an inner city elementary school that is home to 650 students. Eighty percent are high needs students. Forty-five percent are English Language Learners. Fifty-four percent are classified as low income. Thirty-four percent have special needs. Our school contains the SAIL program for students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
My classroom is a sub-separate preschool for students identified with Autism Spectrum Disorders whose degree of challenges require that they remain in an alternative setting.
All of my beautiful, charming and hardworking students have different needs and goals. They brighten my day the minute they pass through our classroom door. I want to do all I can to help them succeed and shine.
My students all have been diagnosed with ASD and exhibit significantly different patterns of sensory processing than their peers and children with other special educational needs.
I am asking for a Flex-Space Collaborative Floor Work Space Bundle so that my students will have a specific space to learn and practice skills and strategies that take into account their physical, social, emotional, sensory and cognitive abilities and needs.
Occupational and physical therapy works to promote, maintain, and develop the skills needed by students to be functional in a school setting and beyond. For my students it also entails teaching strategies that effectively add the sensory filters they need. This low to the floor table and set of 4 cozy chairs with cushioned back supports would be perfect for sensory integration therapy and fine motor physical activity.
