Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is located in the poorest congressional district in the nation, and all students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The school is predominately Latino and African American. Thirty percent of the students are English language learners, and some are the first of their families to graduate. Despite all of this, 100% of our graduating seniors are college or career bound.

Our students should have the same opportunities as any other student in the country.

They work hard to succeed without letting anything get in their way. As a community school, each year our graduation rate has increased, and we want to make their learning as meaningful and purposeful as possible.

After speaking with some of the students, those who had poor attendance and those who had really great attendance, I realized that they need a little motivation and incentives to make it through the rest of this year. I asked them about things they may like, it surprised me because some of the students said they loved the classroom aero gardens that were already in place; however, most said they appreciated things like headphones, cameras, and giftcards.

Each day they are on time to school, and that makes it all the classes, they will receive a ticket. At the end of the marking period we will pull their names out of a bucket for the prizes. Any spoons at 100% perfect attendance for the week get an extra ticket in the bucket and first choice at a reward.
